STORIES OF CHANGEMAKERS

KAMILA GRUDNIEWSKA

And here I'll start with "in our countryside," because I've found that it often sheds a whole new light on the matter, including (or especially) when it comes to social activism or politics.

I was fortunate to grow up with the idea that involvement is important, that the neighborhood is important, that neighborhood kindness is even very important. That's why I think I have such a sense of responsibility for the cause, although sometimes wrongly. I wanted to be aware and involved.
Of course, it started in the parish (well, because where else could it be?). Through small charity events that consisted more of fundraising, I got to scouting. The latter, however, had to be organized from the beginning. I did it with my sister. With great passion and idealism, in attachment to people. Despite the fact that cooperation in the higher structure did not work out, I could not let go. I just cared a lot. I laugh that in terms of action it was there that I probably experienced all the worst, but also the best. Although rather on the negative side, it was there that I understood the importance of a team - each person in it and their comfort in acting; that not everything is taken care of by a "good" leading person. And that not everything depends on me. And hierarchy in an organization is, or at least sometimes is, destructive to those who act and to the organization as a whole.
I got into many more different places, including the youth advisory bodies to the Minister of Education and the Minister of Climate. And paradoxically, despite the clear messages that our opinions were not important, that we were only there to fulfill an image role, I was drawn into politics. But a very different one. Exactly the kind of politics I had not observed, had not experienced, that is reliable, open, equal and diverse, progressive, solidarity and effective.
And for it I am trying to work today, not so revolutionary (although this too is needed), but grassroots, at a pace that local communities are able to cope with. For this, the growing Foundation for Community Education and Activation is a tool.
